Portland is considered "Victoria’s Birthplace" because in 1834 Victoria’s first permanent European settlement was established on Portland Bay.
Portland’s European history began with whalers and sealers who seasonally inhabited the area. In 1834 Edward Henty arrived from Tasmania in search of good grazing land and established the Portland settlement.
Today Portland is a modern harbour-side city, set amongst the backdrop of over 200 historic buildings.
